  • LAURA DEKKER the 16 year old Dutch girl became the youngest sailor to complete a solo circumnavigation in the World on January 21st 2012
  • SIDDHARDH VARADARAJAN is the new Editor in chief and publisher of The Hindu, Business line, Frontline and Sportstar.
  • PANKAJ PACHAURI was appointed as Communication Advisor in the Prime Minister’s office and he is senior television Journalist and Managing Editor of NDTV.
  • HOMAL VYARAWALA India’s first Woman Photojournalist died on 15 January 2012 in Vadodara, Gujarat. She was awarded Padma Vibushan in 2011 in recognition of her contribution as a photo Journalist.
  • C.JAGANNATHA RAO Senior Congress leader and former Deputy Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh died of a heart attack in Secunderabad on 23 January 2012 and he served as deputy CM in the cabinet of Bhavanam Venkatram in 1982.
  • PROFFESSOR PARVIN SINCLAIR pro Vice chancellor of IGNOU is appointed as the Director of the NCERT – National Council for Education Research and Training.
  • M P MURALIDHARAN is now the 19th Director General of the Indian Coast Guard in place of Vice Admiral Anil Chopra.

SPORTS IN JANUARY 2012

  • RAJASTHAN – won Ranji Trophy title by defeating Tamil Nadu at the Chidambaram stadium, Tamil Nadu and V A SAXENA of Rajasthan was awarded the Man of the match in the final. This the second consecutive year of winning the title by Rajasthan.
  • ARGENTINA’S LIONEL MESSI – awarded the 2011 FIFA Best player award in Zurich. This is the third time he is winning this title .
  • JAPANESE HOMARE SAWA – awarded the 2011 best player in the Women’s category.
  • BARCELONA’S COACH PEP GUARDIOLA- was named FIFA coach of the year.
  • RICKY PONTING- Australian batsman was honored with Australia’s highest civil honor along with a host of sportspersons of International repute.
  • A. AMALRAJ – won the National title of 73rd senior National and Inter state Table Tennis Championships in Lucknow 2012 by defeating A.Sharath Kamal. He also won the double’s title with Sanil Shetty by defeating Harmit Desai and Devesh Karia. POULAMI GHATAK won the title in the women’s category by defeating K Shamini.
  • GM OLIVER BARBOSA of Philippines Won the 10th parsvnath International open Grand masters chess tournament by defeating Indian IM SHYAM NIKHIL. Indian International master LALITH BABU won the bronze.
  • KERALA MEN won the 60th Senior National Volley ball Championship by defeating Uttarakhand at the Balbir Juneja Indoor Stadium, Raipur. RAILWAYS won the National title in the women’s category.
  • ROHITH LALITH BABU became the 26th Grand master of India and 4th Grand master from Andhra Pradesh.
  • MILOS RAONIC of Canada won the Chennai open tennis title , 2012. LEANDER PAES AND JANKO TIPSAREVIC won the men’s double’s title.

  • On the Eve of 63rd Republic day, Padma awards for the year 2012 are announced. The awards comprises of 5 Padma Vibushan, 27 Padma Bhushan, 77 Padmashri awards .
  • President of India Prathibha patel conferred the Ashoka Chakra to Lt. NAVDEEP SINGH (POSTHUMOUS) on the occasion of 63rd Republic day 2012 in New Delhi. She also approved the awards of three Kirti Chakra to Lt. Col. KAMALDEEP SINGH , Capt. ASHTHOUSH KUMAR, Lt. SHUSHIL KHAJURIA.
  • RAJESH ROSHAN – Bollywood Music directory was elected for Latamangeshkar Music award –2011  sponsored by Madhya Pradesh.
  • 69th Annual Golden Globe Awards were held in Beverly Hills , California on 15th January 2012. “THE ARTIST” , the French movie, directed by Michel Hazanavicius won three awards.

  • RAMNATH GOENKA AWARDS FOR EXCELLENCE IN JOURNALISM 2012  function is held in Delhi and in J. GOPIKRISHNAN AND UDAYAN MUKHERJEE Won the Journalist of the year for Excellence in Journalism.
  • Honorary Doctor of Literature of Tripura University to Bangladesh prime Minister Sheikh Hasina by Vice president Mohammad Hamid Ansari.
  • JAWAHAR SIRKAR who is the Secretary to the Ministry of Culture was awarded the British Museum Award for his reforms in the field of Indian Museum.
  • D. BALA VENKATESH VARMA was given the first S.K.SINGH award for acting as a key member of the negotiating team that saw the Indo-US nuclear deal.
  • DALAI LAMA- spiritual leader of Tibet was awarded the MAHATMA GANDHI INTERNATIONAL AWARD FOR PEACE AND RECONCILIATION and Ila Gandhi, grand daughter of Mahatma Gandhi presented this award and she is chair person for Gandhi Development Trust.
  • USTAD AMJAD ALI KHAN – was presented with MALLIKARJUN MANSUR AWARD which was given by Karnataka Government in January 2012.

INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS January 2012

  • UN’S FOOD AND AGRICULTURE ORGANISATION (FAO)- recognized Koraput as a Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Stating it honored RAITA MADULI AND CHANDRA PRADHAN OF koraput for preserving the traditional agricultural system of the region.
  • 5th Edition of the WORLD FUTURE ENERGY SUMMIT was held in ABU DHABI, Capital of UAE In January 2012 from 16 to 19th. The theme of the years was Sustainable Energy for all. The summit discussed about various alternative sources of energy which include Solar, Wind, Tidal energy etc.,

NATIONAL AFFAIRS JANUARY 2012

  • INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON NANO SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY (ICONSAT-2012)  is held at Hyderabad 2012 and is organized by International Advanced Research Center for Powder Metallurgy and New Materials (ARCI) Hyderabad.
  • RESIDENT IDENTITY CARDS (RIC) was launched by the home ministry at Porthrapur Village in Andaman and Nicobar Islands on January 2012. This cards are issued to all persons above the age of 18 and lives in the nine Coastal states and four Union Territories Under the National Population Register Scheme. The aim behind is to strengthen the Security along the Country’s Coast line.
  • The Government of India and World Bank signed an IDA credit of 130 million US dollars to finance the project NERLP –North East Rural Livelihoods project to empower rural communities in the North East region especially in the states of Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura and enhance the livelihoods of rural poor especially women and unemployed youth.
  • 15th World Sanskrit conference was held in New Delhi and 14th Sanskrit conference was held in Kyoto, Japan.
  • 10th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas was inaugurated by Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh  in Jaipur and the theme for the year was “The Global Indian: Inclusive Growth”. The next Regional Pravasi Bharatiya Divas will be held in Dubai for the Gulf region.
  • A United Nations Resource Centre for the North East was set up at Guwahati, Assam on 2nd January 2012 and was formally inaugurated by the State Chief Minister Tarun Gagoi.
  • India announced that is became free from bird flu,H5N1 virus on January 2012.

BILATERAL AFFARIS JANUARY 2012

  • INDIA, JAPAN AND CHINA now will share the data for most efficient use of Naval forces present in the Indian ocean Region. This initiative is known as the SHARED AWARENESS AND DECONFLICTION (SHADE).
  • Prime Minister of Trinidad & Tobago Kamla Persad Bissessar Visited India and signed 5 agreements which include MOU on cooperation in the field of Traditional medicine, Air services agreement, Technical Cooperation Agreement in the field of Education, programme of Cultural Exchanges and MOU between Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences Department of Ayush, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the Government of India and the University of West Indies, Trinidad and Tobago.
  • NTPC National Thermal Power  Corporation Signed an agreement with Bangladesh power Development Board (BPDP) for setting up a Joint venture 1320 MW thermal power plant.
  • India Signed a multi lateral agreement to check tax evasion and avoidance with France and Germany.
